CANVASS 1ST DISTRICT FOR KATHLEEN PETITJEAN
Kathleen Petitjean is on the ballot contesting the 1st District South Bend Common Council seat currently held by Derek Dieter.
Kathleen and her supporters are walking sections of the 1st District and leaving flyers at each house. Kathleen will take time to talk to voters. The rest of us are only leafleting.
Please help Kathleen. Meet at Tom Brown's house at 1213 Humboldt St. at 2:00 PM, the next two Saturdays - Oct. 27 and Nov. 3. If you need directions, call Tom's cell phone, 298-2706.
See you there!
SUSTAINABLE COMMUNITIES PANEL
The campus theme this year at IU South Bend is Sustainable Communities.
This Sunday, October 28, a panel will discuss "Going Green - An Overview." The panel starts at 1:30 PM and ends at 4:00 PM, at room 225 in the Student Activities Center.
At least one of the Green candidates for local office will attend the meeting.
"Learn about some of the many ways environmental issues touch our lives. Join our panelists in discussing their ideas about sustainability international, national, regional and local perspectives."
The panelists are:
. Scott Sernau, Professor of Sociology and Anthropology;
. Paul Mishler, Professor of Labor Studies; and,
. Tara Cisczon, Child's Play Organic Lawns.
Bring your suggestions for living greener. Refreshments provided.
CONSCIENTIONS OBJECTION TO WAR: CELEBRATION OF ST. MARCELLUS
The Center for Peace and Nonviolence will again celebrate the life and witness of St. Marcellus, a third-century conscientious objector to war and a martyr. The events are scheduled for Tuesday, October 30, in South Bend.
The day will begin with a St. Marcellus Peace Institute, a seminar and luncheon open at no charge to clergy and lay leaders - and any others who are interested. The Institute will be held at Our Lady of the Road Catholic Church, 744 S. Main St.
To register for the institute, call 574-291-0924 or 574-904-7192.
Public events:
4:00 - dramatization of St. Marcellus' trial at Hunt Plaza
5:00 - peace procession from Hunt Plaza to Unitarian church
5:30 - meal at Unitarian church, contiune procession to Sacred Heart at N.D.
7:30 - talk by Fr. John Dear "Can You Support War and Still Follow Jesus?"
Tom Brown, Green candidate for South Bend mayor, will attend portions of the Institute. Tom is a war resister. He twice refused induction in the U.S. Armed Forces during the Viet Nam war.
ST. JOE VALLEY PROJECT BANQUET
St. Joe Valley Greens have reserved a table for eight at the annual banquet on October 30, 6:00 PM. Green candidates will be at the Green table.
Let the Greens know if you want to attend with us. We can't promise seats at our table at this late date, but it couldn't hurt to get on the list. A seat might open.
For info, call Karl Hardy at 574-246-0536 (wire) or 574-807-1349 (cell).
GREEN UP! STEP IT UP! RALLY
On Sunday, November 4, students from area colleges will converge on the Hunt Plaza in front of the Morris Civic Auditorium at 3:00 PM to rally.
Plans are firming up. Speakers from various groups will address the rally, including the Sierra Club, Congressman Joe Donnelly, local Green Party candidates and others. There will be tables and tents where you can get information.
Last spring some 1,400 Step It Up rallies were held in 50 states, and this
fall's election-time effort is generating similar numbers.
ELECTION DAY
Tuesday, November 6, is Election Day. Four local Greens are running for office, one on the ballot and three as official registered write-ins.
Kathleen Petitjean is on the ballot in the 1st District. The three write-in candidates are Tom Brown for mayor of South Bend, Karl Hardy for South Bend Common Council at-large and David Vollrath for Mishawaka Common Council at-large.
The St. Joseph County Election Board has promised publicly to count and certify all write-in votes this year, unlike previous years. So your write-in will count!
But, you have to ask for a write-in ballot, and you have to place the ballot in a special slot on the front of the ballot box. DO NOT SCAN YOUR BALLOT - PUT IT IN THE SPECIAL SLOT.
If you are unsure about how to cast a write-in ballot, ask a poll worker for help.
ST. JOE VALLEY GREENS CAMPAIGN POST-MORTEM MEETING
The normal St. Joe Valley Greens meeting is the second Thursday of each month. In November, the Greens are postponing their meeting one week to give candidates a breather.
The November meeting will be Thursday, the 15th, at the GLBT Center at 100 Center, Mishawaka and starts at 7:00 PM.
The meeting is intended to be a recap of the campaign. Did the Greens meet their goals? How did the public and media respond to our candidates and platforms? What can Greens do better? What is the next step?
The public and progressives in particular are invited to help with the campaign post-mortem.

GREEN TV
Comcast executives decided a week ago to ensure that some public access programs will run until December 15.
However, the schedule has been cut in half. On November 1, public access channel 99 will begin broadcasting on Monday, Tuesdays and Thursdays only, from 2:30 PM to 10:30 PM.
GreenTV will air on Wednesday evenings at 10:00 PM through October. Beginning Thursday, November 8, GreenTV will air on each Thursday at 2:30 PM.
The schedule may change again in December. Producers have likely stopped submitting shows, forcing Comcast to curtail and rearrange the public access schedule.
