## COMMUNITY FORUM FOR ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT - CFED

The March meeting of the Community Forum for Economic Development is
this Tuesday, March 18, from 7 -9 PM, at the office of the Minority
Health Coalition in LaSalle Square (915 N. Bendix -- just south and west
of the intersection of Bendix and Lincoln Way West).

This meeting will spotlight two projects of the Community Forum's Unity
Committee, the ACE Mentor Project at Washington High School and a our
after-school mentoring program at Dickinson Intermediate. ACE is a
national program that provides career direction for students in
architecture, construction and engineering. For the Dickinson program,
we have partnered with Junior Achievement, the Community Health
Partnership of Memorial Hospital, the Riverbend Community Math Center,
and members of the Building and Construction Trades to develop a
mentoring program for a group of eighth grade students.

We hope you will come and share our excitement about these new projects.
We'll also have a report from the LaSalle Square Steering Committee.
They have begun the process of recommending a planning consultant for
the revitalization.

We'll also have information on the program for the Third Annual
Community Forum on Economic Development -- to be held on Sat. April 26
at IU South Bend.

Hope to see you tomorrow!

## ERIK REECE PUBLIC LECTURE ON COAL MINING

On Tuesday, March 18 - Indiana University South Bend is hosting a public
lecture by Erik Reece, author of Lost Mountain: Radical Strip Mining and
the Devastation of Appalachia.

Erik Reece, Author of Lost Mountain (2006)
Public Lecture: March 18, 2008, 6:00 - 7:15 pm, Weikamp 1001

Erik Reece is the author of Lost Mountain, a literary nonfiction work
about the coal industry and radical strip mining. He teaches at the
University of Kentucky. This book is extraordinary in connecting issues
of nature, health, history, poverty, and economic forces.

Since 94% of Indiana's electricity is generated from coal - this topic
definitely hits home here.

The Sierra Club, the Audubon Society and Citizen Action Coalition have
been active in coal issues in Indiana.

## FIVE YEARS TOO MANY

Rally & Vigil to End the Iraq War
Date: Mon, 17 Mar 2008 05:11:39 +0000
Public area infront of Morris Performing Arts Center
211 N. Michigan Street
19 Mar, 6:00 PM

Michiana residents will gather to mark the 5th anniversary of the start
of the Iraq war and occupation. Nearly 4,000 American troops have been
killed and tens of thousands wounded. Hundreds of thousands of Iraqis
have been killed, wounded or displaced. It's long past time for our
elected officials in Washington to listen to us and end this endless war.

Bring Signs, Candles and Friends!
